Final Fantasy VI Terra, Mog, Locke, Shadow
The painting depicts Shadow, Terra, Mog, and Locke from Final Fantasy VI, reinterpreted from the game’s character designs through Amdall’s own painterly language. Its primary influence is Yoshitaka Amano, whose original Final Fantasy artwork inspired Amdall’s longstanding interest in drawing and painting these characters.
Technically, it is an oil painting characterized by visible, impressionistic brushwork and a muted, earthy palette of umbers, siennas, ochres, reds, and ultramarine. Amdall intentionally uses his normally “muddy” palette, finding it particularly suited to Final Fantasy VI’s darker, industrial and steampunk-inflected atmosphere.
The result feels nostalgic, atmospheric, and imaginative, functioning less as literal game illustration than as a personal reinterpretation of childhood memories and creative inspiration. The characters remain recognizable while the painterly treatment gives them a more tangible, human presence.
