As I’ve progressed in my oil paint/portraiture learning journey, one aspect I needed to focus on was how light and dark interact. With this piece, I wanted to exaggerate and push the boundaries of that light/dark combination. My goal here was to show a dark room with a direct and obvious light source. I think that shows well here, which makes it a painting I am proud of. I also have a long term fascination with dark backgrounds against subjects, and that shows here too. It’s an experiment with mixing darks, testing blues versus browns.
