Books

As anyone who’s seen me at lunchtime with my nose in a book can confirm, I love to read. I have fairly consistent tastes in books; I haven’t met many nonfiction books that I enjoy, but can completely get lost in a well-written novel. I’m not really a fan of short stories, since it’s hard for me to invest in the world being built, but there are some I’ve enjoyed. I’ll read every novel Joe Hill and Neil Gaiman write, and also greatly enjoy Stephen King, George RR Martin, Jim Butcher, and Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child collaborations.

I guess that Suspense/Horror/Mystery/Fantasy roll-up is a pretty specific corner of the literary world; I do branch out a bit, but those sorts of books are definitely my comfort food. On the off chance that you reached this page, and have similar reading tastes, I thought I’d pop in some Goodreads information here. I’ll try to keep that updated over time. Although Goodreads does automatically grab what I’m reading from my Kindle, I do still sometimes go with the ol’ paper book.

Jon’s bookshelf: read

The Drawing of the Three
it was amazing
I really enjoyed Drawing of the Three, as expected after reading the first book. If you like the world established in the Gunslinger, you should definitely move forward with the second one.The book is a fascinating read, and Roland ent…

The Gunslinger
it was amazing
I’m a big fan of Stephen King, but had never read the Dark Tower series. I also really didn’t know much about it, other than it’s something about a Gunslinger, and that [spoilers removed]. So, I went in mostly blind. Well, book #1 was no…
A Conspiracy of Faith
liked it
Book #3 of the Department Q series is decent, but not as good as the first two. Part of the issue is the novels are becoming very formulaic; Carl is lazy but sharp, Assad has secrets and is very capable in a fight. The stories all follow…
The Stand
it was amazing
An excellent read with a large cast of memorable characters. Many of the characters on both sides have become classics in my mind, as I think about the book a couple months later. Randall Flagg, the Trashcan Man, Tom Cullen, Stu, Larry, …
'Salem's Lot
it was amazing
I liked Salem’s Lot quite a bit, but was a bit surprised with the direction it took. This review will have spoilers, but I’ll mark them. I had a general idea the book had vampires, but didn’t realize it would be such a slow build, [spoil…
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
it was amazing
I purchased a copy of the Tales of Dunk and Egg, with all three volumes and containing illustrations, after reading the entire (at least to this point) A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF) series. Although ASOIAF has become one of my favorite…
Doctor Sleep
it was amazing
I love Stephen King, yet haven’t read the Shining (I know, it’s shameful). I’ll correct that at some point, but at least I’ve seen the movie a few times. Even without having read the first book, I dove into Doctor Sleep and enjoyed it th…
Stardust
it was amazing
