Exhaustion, Art Print of an Oil Painting. Originally, I was referring to this as “wall leaning” or something like that, but I did a social media poll asking what feeling this painting conveys, and most said exhaustion, so that fits. I often don’t see my paintings the same way others do, so I’m not sure my opinion will match others here. But this is really one of my favorites – I think it’s one of the most visually interesting paintings I’ve done. Although I take no credit for that, because I’m really just trying to emulate other styles. Regardless though, and maybe I’m overstating this, but it’s perhaps one of the first that I’ve done that looks like a real art piece rather than a study.
My oldest daughter told me that she thinks it looks like a Sargent painting from a book I have, which is quite a compliment! Certainly not at that skill level, but it made my day for sure – and I can see a similar vibe at least. Like many portrait oil painters, I am a big admirer of Sargent’s work, so it makes sense that I’d try to reflect some of that whenever possible. I do think it’s probably my most natural looking figure study to date as well, capturing what I think is a fairly real-looking pose.
