I thought this would be another fun one to try to paint, particularly since the characters (the “Warriors of Light”) aren’t as well defined as other later entries. Magus was one of my favorite characters in this amazing game. I always loved his story, with the search for his sister across time. Especially learning his origins in Zeal. Even though Chrono is the main protagonist, Magus’ story felt like the core of the plot to me. Sometimes I like to compare sketches and paintings in different mediums just to see how much fidelity I can maintain with my loose and relatively unplanned approach. Sometimes I overlook how great FFIV, but it was such a step up from the US perspective as it was our next release after the first game. This piece is of Cecil and Rydia towards the back half of the game. Rydia was fairly straightforward, but providing my spin on Cecil as a paladin was tricky. Overall happy with how it turned out! Over new years, one of my oldest friends unexpectedly passed away. Andy had a kind heart, always keeping others’ wellbeing at the front of his mind. When we were teenagers, extrovert Andy decided to befriend this introvert, which really did a lot to help get me out of my comfort zone. I met many people who would become lifelong friends through Andy. I’ll always value knowing him, and he will be missed by many. Rest in peace, buddy. I usually bring a sketchbook with me when I travel, but this time I decided to try using an Apple Pencil/iPad with Procreate to do some digital sketching. I have very little experience with this, so it took some trial and error. I did less paintings in 2025 compared to the previous year, but I still feel like I can see improvement as I get more repetition. I think composition would be useful, but the best thing might be getting more serious about learning color theory, color mixing, and how to be more intentional with it. The majority of my paintings are of just one subject, but I had an urge to try a crowd of people. Since the largest I usually work is 12” x 12”, it’s tough to fit detail with a large group. Composition and efficiency are pretty important with these, trying to make the best use of time and energy as the piece comes together. Some preview video from a painting I really enjoyed - a scene from the classic SNES game the Secret of Mana. One of my all time favorite games, with a soundtrack I still enjoy. I had a lot of fun painting this one, although it was a challenge to try depicting the characters in a bit more grounded way. Full time lapse to come later! Back in 2024, I participated in the Postcard Art Exhibit (@paeartforacause), a charity event where artists can donate 5” x 7” art pieces. This year, it’s a bit far from me, but I wanted to contribute another piece - this has a bit more going on than the last one. Some background subjects, a bit more scenery. Continuing on with my exploration of oil painting in a sketchbook, here’s one of our family kitten. Although the coloring is pretty accurate, I don’t think the features are right - spacing between the eyes, nose size, a few other aspects. A fun exercise for sure, but not the best cat likeness. The last post in a 3 part series, here I’m painting the last details using mostly brighter oil mixes (titanium white, small amounts of ochre, sienna, umber). Dropping some texture and highlights to emphasize certain areas. Painting the Background of a Portrait, Sketchbook Part 2. This clip shows the start to finish background process, filling in with oil paint around the subject. The oils allow for a nice blending effect into the contours of the portrait. A very satisfying part of the process! Something I always look forward to. Painting a Portrait Outline, Sketchbook Part 1. I thought I’d try something a little different by sharing some longer clips of specific stages of a portrait painting. This is the initial loose outline, done with a middle hue and value oil paint thinned with linseed oil. This oil painting of a skeleton pirate was a commission earlier in the year that I thoroughly enjoyed. I took another crack at painting in this black sketchbook I bought. I’ve had a difficult time trying to paint directly on black paper, so I went with a layer of acrylic this time before laying down any oil paint. I did another two page session - this first one somehow ended up looking kind of like Vincent Van Gogh I think (I mean the person not the style). This worked better!
